《感动中国2021年度人物》是中国中央电视台《感动中国》节目组主办的年度人物评选活动，以“平凡铸就伟大，英雄来自人民”为核心主题，全面展现中国人所经历的波澜壮阔的2021年。

2022年3月3日晚，《感动中国2021年度人物颁奖盛典》为年度人物彭士禄、杨振宁、顾诵芬、吴天一、朱彦夫、中国航天人、苏炳添、陈贝儿、张顺东李国秀夫妇、江梦南。

“Touching China” is a mental brand column created by CCTV1, which is hosted by the live broadcasting group of the social special department of the news center. It is launched every year around the Lantern Festival and has been held for many years.

A group of 10 high-profile figures and common citizens gifted with wisdom, bravery and tenacity(顽强), were honored as inspirational role models in this year's Touching China awards announced by China Central Television on March 3rd, 2022.

为了让同学们记住这一个个发光发热的名字，致敬向上的力量；为了让大家更多地了解这些或为祖国默默奉献，或在逆境中坚守的平凡而伟大的中国人，高中英语组在中庭展出了年度人物的中英文事迹介绍。

Renowned Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Mr. Yang Zhenning, became the first Chinese-American scientist who applied to return to China after the US just lifted the ban on visits to China in 1971. Mr. Yang also sponsored hundreds of Chinese scholars to further their studies in the US through a committee for education exchanges he established in New York. These talents later became the backbone of the construction of China. Mr. Yang has made great contributions in different scientific fields, such as particle physics and statistical mechanics. He always concerns himself with the education and technology in China. Mr. Yang has made important contributions to both the development of technology in China and the technological and cultural exchange between China and other countries.

 

Another nominee was Su Bingtian, the first Chinese sprinter to compete in the men's 100-meter sprint final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. At the age of 32, he shocked the world by finishing first in his group with a time of 9.83 seconds on the semi-final, 0.08 seconds faster than his Asian record of 9.91 seconds in 2018. He is the Asian record holder of both the men’s 60-meter sprint and the men’s 100-meter sprint.

 

Zhu Yanfu joined the army at the age of 14. He lost his hands, his left eye and both legs below the knee in a battle during the Korean War in the 1950s. The army he was in fought bravely against the enemy in the battlefield despite the harsh weather where the temperature was 30 degree below zero. He was the only survivor. At that time, he was just 17. After he went back to his hometown, he set up a school and has been giving lessons to local illiterate villagers for five years. He helped lift the villages out of poverty in the next 25 years.

 

This year's Touching China awards also focused on China's space community for opening new horizons in the starry ocean of the cosmos, including building China's own space station, a smooth interplanetary travel and landing beyond the Earth-Moon system with the Mars probe, Tianwen-1, and the exploration of Mars. Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo ---- the three Shenzhou-12 taikonauts who extended the record of Chinese astronauts' longest stay in space in a single flight mission to 90 days.

 

The renowned aircraft designer, who won the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award , is the only person in the country's aviation industry to hold membership of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He pioneered the aerodynamic design of aircraft, which advanced the development of a number of major jet fighters, including the Nanchang CJ-6, a basic training plane, and the Shenyang J-8, a high-speed, high-altitude single-seat interceptor. Those aircraft not only greatly improved China's air defense capabilities but also laid the cornerstone of its aviation industry.

 

Janis Chan, the Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) host, acts as a guide for audiences in the documentary No Poverty Land. It is the wish of the team to allow people to understand more about the Chinese mainland. They want to show real life, the remote villages, and the journey out of poverty. Janis and her team overcame great difficulties, both mentally and physically, filming the poverty alleviation they saw in China and described it as "a miracle", a success achieved by grassroots governments and local residents through years of hard work. Now they have shown this miracle to the world.

 

In the 1950s, when the Korean War was over, Mr. Wu Tianyi went to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Seeing his comrades die of diseases caused by the high altitude, he was heartbroken. From then on, he was determined to devote himself to the study of high altitude medicine. During his research work on the plateau, he had a car accident and suffered multiple fractures. His hard work was also ruining his health, leaving him with perforated eardrums, cataract and heart disease. However, according to Mr. Wu, there are no gains without pains. During the construction of the Qinghai - Tibet railway, Mr. Wu Tianyi endeavored to ensure the physical health of all the 140 thousand construction workers. At last, none of them died of the high altitude diseases.

 

Mr. Peng Shilu had a miserable childhood. His parents died when he was a small child and he was adopted by about twenty families after that. However, despite the adversity, he worked hard at his study and excelled in chemistry engineering. In the 1950s, the project of building nuclear-powered submarines was launched in our country. Mr. Peng eagerly seized the opportunity to join in the project the moment he came back to China from the Soviet Union and played an important part in the reseach team. He also took part in the construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant. Mr. Peng Shilu has devoted all his life to the development of the nuclear power in China.

 

The couple Zhang Shundong and Li Guoxiu overcame their physical difficulties, beating all the odds to build a family and earned a living with only one hand and two legs. With the development of e-commerce, they opened an online shop and sold the local specialties. Great determination and perseverance guided them through the hardest time and they lifted themselves out of poverty. When they lifted the Touching China trophy they, endeared themselves to millions of people!

 

Jiang Mengnan, a deaf Chinese girl, was admitted to study doctorate at Tsinghua University in 2018. Though life kept throwing Jiang more challenges, the positive young lady regarded them as "gifts of fate." Jiang Mengnan's story is the one of triumph over adversity. Deaf almost since birth, she has overcome myriad obstacles to achieve her dream of studying for a PhD at one of China's most prestigious schools.
